BorgWarner’s Race-Proven Turbocharging Technology Delivers Powerful Performance and Durability without Incident

Auburn Hills, Michigan, October 23, 2012 – BorgWarner’s first year as the exclusive turbocharger supplier for the IZOD IndyCar® Series established a reputation of powerful performance, durability and dependability for EFR (Engineered for Racing) turbochargers. Throughout the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series race season, BorgWarner’s EFR turbochargers accumulated over 212,000 miles during practice, test, qualifying and race events without incident. In the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Series, LMP2 class cars boosted by EFR turbochargers won first in their class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (2,298 miles), the 12 Hours of Sebring (1,180 miles), and the Petit Le Mans (1,000 miles) without a single incident. The American Le Mans Series champion and the current point leader in the WEC Series also employ EFR turbochargers under the hood.

“The race track is the ultimate proving ground for technologies destined for the highway. With its new emphasis on road relevance, the IZOD IndyCar Series chose BorgWarner turbocharging technology to develop more powerful, fuel-efficient technologies that could boost future production vehicles,” said Pete Kohler, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo Systems. “BorgWarner combined its rich racing heritage and extensive expertise in materials and aerodynamic techniques to engineer a completely new line of turbochargers. We are very pleased that our EFR turbochargers have earned a reputation of dependability, durability and performance.”

“BorgWarner’s relationship with Indy car racing goes beyond having their name on the Indianapolis 500 winner’s trophy,” said Randy Bernard, CEO of INDYCAR. “They helped INDYCAR usher in a new era for our sport by providing the twin and single turbochargers that help foster the robust manufacturer competition that the IZOD IndyCar Series had in 2012. The results our new turbocharged engines showed on track are a testament to the technology and commitment BorgWarner brings to the IZOD IndyCar Series.”

With a range of units supporting 225 to 1,000 horsepower per turbocharger, BorgWarner’s EFR Series offers an unprecedented combination of advanced technologies designed to boost the performance of downsized engines while improving fuel economy. Streamlined EFR turbochargers for the IZOD IndyCar Series feature low-weight, race-proven Gamma-Ti turbine wheels and shaft assemblies for quick boost response. Patent-pending ceramic ball bearings increase thrust capacity and durability while improving turbine efficiency at low expansion ratios. The investment cast stainless steel turbine housing also increases efficiency, improves durability and resists corrosion BorgWarner’s latest EFR turbocharging technology will be introduced at the 2012 SEMA show, the world’s premier automotive specialty performance products trade event, held in Las Vegas, October 30 – November 2.
