The Power Electronics Controls Specialist is responsible for the development of innovative controls solutions in Onboard Charger and DC/DC application. This individual understands the steps and effort involved to mature new controls solutions from the concept phase all the way through to a production ready implementation. Using objective and measurable metrics, this engineer will analyze multiple potential controls solutions to determine the best solution to achieve given controls objectives. Finally, candidates will have the experience and expertise to clearly communicate controls features at either a conceptual level or at a technically detailed level.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Develop innovative electrical architecture and controls solutions for efficient power conversion of Onboard Chargers and DC/DC converters.
  • Define microcontroller architecture timing parameters for input and output signals.
  • Experience with power electronics designs
  • Mature new controls solutions from concept to production ready
  • Support BorgWarner product development team with technical design analysis, trade-off studies, design reviews and customer communications
  • Focal point for machine controls design technical discussions with cross-competency teams, management, and customers
  • Communicate existing and future controls capabilities and limitations to cross-competency teams, management, and customers
  • Assist in quoting engineering design and development efforts for new business opportunities including the proper decomposition, allocation, and documentation of controls requirements
  • Be a representative for BorgWarner electrification controls at technical conferences
  • Drive quality controls software architecture and implementation concepts
  • Determine, document, and share best practice techniques and procedures and apply them to analysis, design, and experimental testing
  • Mentor the less experienced and be a role model for BorgWarner beliefs

What we’re looking for 

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Preferred masters or PhD in electrical engineering control theory
  • In-depth Understanding of:
    • Vector control
    • Direct torque control
    • Various PWM techniques
    • Physics-based modeling of power electronics
    • Observer design theory
    • Discrete domain control system analysis and implementation
    • MATLAB/Simulink modeling of and power electronics and loads including AC grid
    • Electronics power dissipations
    • Transformers design for electronics parasitic effects
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of operation of:
    • AC power grid in US and Europe
    • Switching power supplies
    • Transformers
    • Power semiconductor devices (SiC, GaN, and MOSFET) and associated driver circuitry
  • Experience characterizing transformer design including:
    • Flux-Linkages
    • Resistances
    • Inductances
    • Optimum operating points
    • Losses
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience designing architectures and controls for power electronics
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with system, electrical, software, and mechanical teams.
  • Ability to solve problems efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to work under limited supervision
  • Ability and willingness to travel 10% domestically or internationally
  • Strong fundamental engineering skillset and ability to apply fundamental engineering concepts to a variety of complex tasks and situations
