Role SENIOR FIRMWARE ENGINEER POWER ELECTRONICS

POSITION SUMMARY
Permanent contract, this position is located at BorgWarner’s Italy Plant in Lugo (RA).
The Senior Firmware Engineer will focus on motor control inverters (drives) and dc/dc converters software design and debugging. This includes advanced field oriented algorithms, and controls for Permanent Magnet, Synchronous Motors and AC Induction Motors. Together with the design activity, and in specific projects, the Senior Firmware Engineer will also take the role of Project Manager and SW architect.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software using C language and model-based design methodology, following the company process and in line with the applied normative and standards
  • Contribute to all phases of the software development life cycle including requirements analysis, design, implementation and testing. Ensuring documented bi-directional requirements traceability.
  • Develop and perform software unit tests, integration tests, and system level tests on a motor test bench or vehicle
  • Produce clear documentation for software design and test results
  • Identify and solve a broad range of problems using an analytical approach and out-of-the box thinking.
  • Work as part of an effective development team based at multiple global sites. Excellent communication skills and ability to work directly with customers and colleagues
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the software team
  • For some projects take on the role of project manager and occasional travel required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. / M.S. in Computer Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical / Electronic Engineering (or similar)
  • 3+ years of experience as an embedded software engineer in highly structured environments
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve product goals in an innovative and fast-paced environment
  • Excellent knowledge of embedded development and real time applications for control of power electronics
  • Fluent in English

Background

  • Extensive experience of embedded languages: C
  • Experience of automotive systems and software development processes using the V-Model for both design and verification / validation activities
  • Experience with embedded design tools and compilers: specifically for ARM based architectures and TI Code Composer Studio preferred
  • Vehicle CAN network protocols and tools – CANopen, J1939, UDS, XCP (using Vector tools)
  • Software versioning (Git), project monitoring (JIRA) and requirements management (Polarion)
  • Performed software static and dynamic analysis (using tools such as LDRA)
  • Experience in defining SW architectures and a modular approach when designing. Allowing for software re-use between products and architectures.

Desired

  • Experience with scripting (Python, shell), OO languages (C++, Java) and graphic libraries (QT)
  • Linux (Yocto) and Windows programming
  • Experience with IoT, Internet languages (HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP) and protocols (HTTP, MQTT, TCP/IP)
  •  Database (MySQL) 
  • Routing and Network security knowledge 
  • Experience with online payments 
  • Deep knowledge of control and stability theory. Model based design and code generation using MATLAB / Simulink / State flow
  • Microcontroller abstraction experience – developing low level drivers, understanding schematics and hardware-software interfaces
  • Experience with industrial and automotive (ISO 26262) functional safety principles and certification
  • Familiarity with the Automotive SPICE development process
  • Experience with automotive cybersecurity (ISO 21434)
