Oil-free bearings for turbochargers is gaining attention to meet the challenging pollution norms and improve their efficiency. Automobile and turbocharger OEM's are working towards industrial realization to use foil journal bearings in turbochargers. To design bearings for such high speed rotating machinery, accurate modelling of the pressure generated inside the bearing is crucial for their safe operation. We offer an opportunity for a potential student to work on this interesting and challenging topic.

Your Key Accountabilities:   

  • Literature survey on foil bearings and their application in turbochargers
  • Derive governing equations of foil bearings
  • Simplified modelling of the foil bearings in COMSOL/MATLAB using finite elements
  • Calculate pressure profile within the bearing and resultant forces
  • Analyze dynamic behavior of simple rotor models supported on foil bearings
  • Write a detailed report on the theory and results of the study


Your Profile:

  • Student (m/f/d) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Basic knowledge on Fluid mechanics, Partial differential equations, Finite Element method
  • Hands on experience (not essential) with MATLAB, COMSOL
  • Problem solving skills, self-learning approach
